Rivian Automotive and Volkswagen Group have launched a $5.8 billion joint venture, Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC, to advance next-generation electric vehicles. Combining Rivian’s cutting-edge software and electrical expertise with Volkswagen’s global scale, the partnership will create scalable platforms for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs).
Co-led by Wassym Bensaid (Rivian) and Carsten Helbing (Volkswagen), the joint venture will initially operate from Palo Alto, California, with plans for global expansion.
The collaboration aims to accelerate EV innovation, integrating Rivian’s technology into Volkswagen’s new models by 2027 and offering features like over-the-air updates and automated driving. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume called it a step to strengthen competitiveness, while Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted its role in driving EV adoption.
