For aerospace, energy, sporting goods
and other high-technology products whose viability depends on extreme
light weight ,
efficiency
or other high-performance
factors, we can apply our systematic approach to create
performance beyond what may have been thought possible.
Our comprehensive System-Level
Analytic Modeling and Optimization method (SLAMO), developed over
the last several years, enables us to evaluate performance tradeoffs and
perform global numerical optimization. In this method, system goals are
identified and reduced
to one or more FOM (figures of merit) and constraints. The various
temperatures, pressures, ratios, dimensions, etc. are parameterized.
Mathematical relations, simple at first but evolving in sophistication and
accuracy, are developed to inter-link the parameters while a top-level
optimization routine continually adjusts individual parameters looking for
system improvement. CAD models are linked to dimensional parameters to
allow nearly immediate visualization and/or FEA confirmation of the
evolving design.
This
methodology has been applied
in the past to the system tradeoffs involved in optimization of an
experimental resonant radioisotope powered heat engine/generator intended
for the Pluto Express deep-space probe. This approach allowed a system
that required only one Plutonium General Purpose Heat Source rather than
two for a competing dynamic system or five for Thermal PV cells.
The system mass was reduced by a factor of two through this
optimization process. A similar approach was used in the modeling of a
waste-heat driven Stirling engine for generating onboard electrical power
for Aircraft. A number of cryocooler projects also benefited this
analysis including a 65K single stage, a
two-stage 30K and a multi-stage 11K cooler.
With this approach, it is much
easier to determine sensitivity to the various assumptions made, likely
deviations in the as-built equipment, and off-design operating conditions. |

Concepts, prototypes, test
facilities, testing, and designs; all are supported throughout with sound
engineering calculations quantifying
such factors as strength, heat transfer, fluid flow, durability and other
relevant parameters that are important
to the success of the idea. Creative concept development is coupled with
in-depth quantitative evaluation to gen erate
innovative, cost-effective solutions. We utilize state-of-the-art science,

More
often, products must balance their performance against the real-world
factors of manufacturing
cost and the market: what users value in a product and how much
each factor or feature is worth to
them. This version of our optimization process uses analysis of
existing products and market research to fold in specific,
quantitative data about
what users want and how much they want it. In addition, a routine that
estimates relative manufacturing costs for product variations aids the
maximization of Return On Investment
in a new product. |
